Embarrassment, lies, deceit, and humiliation is MTV’s new reality series Catfish The TV Show. The show takes you on a journey as a person gets to meet the man or woman they have fallen for online, only to find out that person isn’t really who they say they are. At least that’s what you see in the first two episodes. Let’s hope the next episodes have a happy ending!
The reality show originated from the documentary film Catfish. The Creator Nev Schulman and his friend and filmmaker Max Joseph set out to help couples who have never met in real life. Schulman himself fell victim to lies of a woman whom he fell in love with over the internet and that woman wasn’t anything near what she said she was.
Schulman gets requests from people asking him for his help in determining whether or not their online-only significant other is lying or telling the truth about their identity. Each episode is a different couple with a different story and he flies out to wherever they live and tries to help them by doing background checks and research to uncover the truth. He will contact the other person to get a meeting set up so they both can meet for the first time and documents the outcome.
Catfish The TV Show premiered on November 12, 2012. Since its debut, the cyber world has spoken. People took to Twitter to share their thoughts:
I’m stil the same person. I’m just older. Have 4 kids. Not buff. And poor. But everything else I said to u was real!#catfish
As a viewer, you empathise with both sides. Everyone wants someone to love and nobody wants to be alone so its not a surprise how this can happen. At one point you’re like, “Why would someone use someone else’s identity and make up lies to attract someone?” But then you find out the persons insercurities and it’s pretty sad.
Then you think, how did someone fall for some of the the lies told to them….there were clearly red flags? Then again, people don’t always think logically when they’re in love. One things for sure, it takes a brave person to get exposed on national TV.
For anyone considering dating online, you might have second thoughts after watching this how. Dating online or not, you’ll definitely learn that you should do your research if haven’t already done so and don’t be afraid to ask questions. It will save you a lot of pain and heartache, not to mention embarrassment.
Here’s a song dedication to all you cyber lovers out there!
